Second annual award for excellence in jewelry design The competition was Open for GIA students! The second annual Gianmaria Buccellati Foundation (GBF) Award for Excellence in Jewelry Design was presented to Gemological Institute of America (GIA) graduate Ching-Hui Weng. The competition was open to students who successfully completed the GIA Jewelry Design course in 2018 – recognizes artistic excellence in jewelry design. Weng was one of the 18 finalists from seven GIA schools around the world whose hand-rendered designs were judged by a committee of gem and jewelry experts in design, manufacturing and retail. “Each year I am blown away by the spectacular pieces that our students create,” said Elizabeth Brehmer, GIA technical advisor for jewelry manufacturing arts. “Ching-Hui Weng’s brooch design is beautiful and demonstrates great technical ability that truly showcases what she learned in the Jewelry Design course at GIA.” Weng, who studied at GIA’s Taiwan

Kennady begins winter exploration

Plans 2K meters to test the exploration targets! Mountain Province Diamonds Inc announces that the winter exploration program at their Kennady North Project has begun. The Kennady North Project encompasses 67,164 hectares of prospective claims and leases that are directly adjacent to the Gahcho Kué Mine and are 100%-held by the Company. The winter program will focus on drill-testing several combined indicator and geophysical targets located west and southwest of the Hearne kimberlite, which is part of the Gahcho Kué Mine. The drilling program plans for 2,000 meters of drilling to test the exploration targets. The resulting product was a glacial till ranking scheme that could be combined with geophysical data to generate target areas for follow-up sampling and drilling. Several of these target areas are the focus of exploration in 2019. Zimbabwe eye to explore Chihota

Mahusekwa explored by De Beers in the late 90s The ZCDC (Pvt) Limited intends to carry out diamond exploration activities on 450 hectares in Mahusekwa, Chihota Communal Land. The proposed project area was explored by De Beers in the late 90s to early 2000s, but results were never made public. Exploration will be done using ground penetrating radar to locate areas of potential which will then be studied in detail by drilling and trenching selected points away from homesteads. Thus, no relocations will be done. Bulk samples will then be collected using excavators. These samples will be processed on site using a 10tph mobile DMS plant. All excavation waste material will then be used to backfill all the opened pits. Some potential positive impacts will include employment creation and community infrastructure development. Potential negative impacts are deforestation, destruction of animal habitats, loss of aesthetic value, noise and dust pollution. Mitigation measure

98.8 carats mined at Zapolyarnaya

Alrosa’s Verkhne-Munskoye deposit gives new large gem-quality diamond On February 17, 2019, a unique gem-quality rough diamond weighing 98.8 carats was mined at Zapolyarnaya kimberlite pipe, which is the part of the Verkhne-Munskoye diamond deposit. The gem has an octahedral shape. There are inclusions in the peripheral and intermediate zones. Rough diamond is transparent with a visible yellow shade, gem-quality. "This is the second major find since the launch of the deposit last October. It allows us to speak about the great potential of the Verkhne-Munskoye deposit. Not every kimberlite pipe regularly brings large diamonds over 50 carats, especially when it comes to such a large crystal, like this one - weighing almost 100 carats. Despite some inclusions, it is clear that this is a high quality stone. Zambian shares experience on Future of the gemstone mining A high-level delegation of officials from Zambia visited Mozambique last week to share experiences on the future of the gemstone mining sector between the two nations, which are home to the world’s largest emerald and ruby mines respectively. The delegation, led by Ministry of Mines Permanent Secretary Paul Chanda, included senior representatives from the Zambia Revenue Authority, Mine Workers Union of Zambia (MUZ), National Union of Miners & Allied Workers (NUMAW) and Industrial Development Corporation (IDC), which owns 25 percent of Kagem Mining in a partnership with London-based Gemfields, which also operates Montepuez Ruby Mining (MRM) in the Cabo Delgado Province of Mozambique. Alrosa sold 121 rough diamonds!

Alrosa earns $8.3 mn at Dubai auction Alrosa, the largest diamond mining company in the world, held international auction for special size rough diamonds (over 10.8 carats) in Dubai. The overall revenue amounted to $8.3 million. The company sold 121 rough diamonds with total weight of 1,950 carats. Firms from UAE, India, Belgium, Israel, Hong Kong, Russia and the USA participated in the auction, and 31 firms were recognized as winners in different positions. “Alrosa and Dubai have a longstanding partnership. Since 2014, we have been cooperating with the Dubai Diamond Exchange on industry issues; we have our trading company here, where we regularly hold auctions. This year, we decided to increase the number of auctions in Dubai to five, because we see stable demand, including from local firms,” Evgeny Agureev, Member of the Management Board, Director of the United Selling Organization at Alrosa, said.
