Bharat Diamond Bourse (BDB), the world’s largest diamond exchange, launched, The Brahmastra, a book authored by D. Sivanandhan, IPS (Retd.), former Director General of Police, Maharashtra, and former Commissioner of Police, Mumbai. The event reflected BDB’s role as more than a global diamond trading hub, serving also as a venue for cultural and community milestones.
The book chronicles Sivanandhan’s pivotal role in dismantling Mumbai’s underworld during the turbulent 1990s and early 2000s. In the aftermath of the 1993 serial bomb blasts, which killed 257 and injured nearly 1,500 people, Mumbai was under siege by an organized crime syndicate. Mafia networks led by Dawood Ibrahim orchestrated murders, extortion, and kidnappings, with over 150 high-profile victims including industrialists, builders, and celebrities.
In 1998, at a time when many were hesitant to take charge, Sivanandhan assumed office as Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime). Through a combination of strategic intelligence, the enforcement of the Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA), and decisive crackdowns, including the detention of over 1,600 criminals and the seizure of 2,500 illegal weapons, he broke the back bone of this organized crime syndicate, restoring peace in Mumbai by 2001. The Brahmastra; offers a first-person account of these efforts, blending leadership lessons with an inspiring narrative.
The launch event was attended by many dignitaries and well-wishers. BDB President Anoop Mehta while calling, The Brahmastra- truly inspirational also lauded Sivanandhan’s services for offering consultation in shaping BDB’s robust security system, while Vice-President Mehul Shah, in a poetic vote of thanks, described him as a; family member, of BDB. Shah also recalled Sivanandhan’s role in launching the Roti Bank initiative at the Bourse.
The dignitaries and Industry members who attended the launch featured Kirit Bhansali, Chairman of the Gem & Jewellery Export Promotion Council (GJEPC); Milan Parikh, Suresh Shah, Dr. Radha Krishna Pillai, noted author of Corporate Chanakya, Sanjay Saxena, retired DGP Maharashtra, and Manish Kalwania, IPS, Deputy Commissioner of Police. The audience included. Sivanandhan’s former colleagues including Shrish Inamdar retired now associated with BDB also conducted the ceremony & shared his experience. In large numbers BDB members, and staff also gathered in large numbers to underscoring his enduring respect and legacy.
The launch of The
Brahmastra Unleashed at BDB not only commemorates Sivanandhan’s transformative
impact on policing Mumbai city, but also highlights BDB’s commitment to hosting
events of cultural and societal significance, reinforcing its role as a trusted
community hub.
