BDB VP Mehul Shah elected as GII Chairman

Mehul Shah with experience of 4 decades in the Diamond sector 

Gemmological Institute of India (GII), incorporated in 1971, has a long history of serving the diamonds, Gems & Jewelry sector by providing laboratory services, diamond detection, certification, research and education and onsite testing. 

GII has its own diamond detection machine Q CHECK. GII is also a pioneer in terms of certifying color gemstones. GII is a joint initiative of GJEPC, BDB, DEAL, MDMA and GJEA.

Mehul Shah comes in with rich experience of more than 4 decades in the Diamond sector. His expertise in understanding diamond certification, grading and technology is well known in the sector.  

On Mehul Shah’s appointment as the Chairman of GII, industry members expressed their support, viewing him as a worthy successor to outgoing Chairman Anoop Mehta. Mehta is recognized for his significant contributions to GII, notably enhancing transparency and professionalism within the institution.  

Shah expressed his gratitude to Mehta, stating, "I thank Anoop Mehta for having taken GII to the heights that it is today. I will try to live up to his expectations and strive to achieve the trust that the industry members have bestowed on me". Regarding GII's future plans, Shah highlighted the influence of artificial intelligence and automation on grading & certification, education, and diamond detection.  

He also emphasized his commitment to continuing educational initiatives for industry members and expanding GII's presence across India and into the Asia-Pacific region.

India’s C&P diamonds imports grew up 70%

  India’s C&P diamonds exports fall 27.93% in February   According to the available February 2024 statistics for Cut & Polished Diamonds exports & import of India say, that the import of Cut & Polished (C&P) diamonds enjoys a higher percentage over exports!    The overall gross export of Cut & Polished (C&P) diamonds at US$ 1707.44 million (Rs. 14162.59 crores) in month of February 2024 is showing a decline of 27.93%(-27.680% in Rs. Term) as compared to US$ 2369.1 million (Rs. 19582.38 crores) for the same period of previous year (YoY). India & EFTA ink TEPA to Triple G&J Exports

Eying to push G&J exports from US$335mn to US$ 1billion   The Trade and Economic Partnership Agreement (TEPA) between India and European Free Trade Association (EFTA) has opened immense opportunities for Indian gem and jewellery (G&J) sector to enhance its exports to the untapped EFTA countries especially to Switzerland.
